Jaime Sorto, his brothers Hugo and Jose Bonilla, and his brother-in-law Jose Zelaya looked for a name that symbolizes their concept of two cultures coming together.
They chose La Malinche, the name given to a historical figure who has been at the center of controversy for centuries. The noble Mexican woman was enslaved and given to Hernán Cortés, a Spanish conquistador. She became his interpreter and confidante. Their son was viewed as the first mestizo, a child of mixed blood.
Many Mexicans consider La Malinche or Doña Marina to have been a traitor, but today, she is also honored as the symbolic mother of the country’s mixed-race people.
At La Malinche, all of the starters, vegetables, meats and seafood are served as Spanish tapas, called botanas in Mexico.

She did a great job checking on us, explaining menu items and communicating to the kitchen of a food allergy. Despite it being a full restaurant during our time there, we were still attended to by staff regularly at Miss Toya’s, we could talk and enjoy the music without having to yell -which can be an issue with brunches in general. The food was delicious, brought out hot and promptly after ordering. We’re 19 years apart, but when we get together, the age gap disappears because the vibes are ALWAYS there. And The Breakfast Club gave us the perfect place to start our birthday celebration. From the moment we got there, the energy was GOOD. The restaurant was definitely giving brunch, birthday, good food, good drinks, and good people. It was a little loud where we were sitting because we were right behind a pretty big party, but honestly? We weren’t bothered at all. We can vibe with anybody! 😂 We ended up enjoying their energy too because that’s just how we are. And then came the BIRTHDAY SURPRISE! 🎉 Our waiter came through and made sure we felt special. I wish I could remember his name because he deserves TENS ACROSS THE BOARD! Seriously! 👏🏽 He was attentive, friendly, and made sure we were good throughout our experience. Then they came out and SANG HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO BOTH OF US and brought us a little birthday cake! 🎂 Listen… I was looking around and I didn’t see them doing that for everybody, so we definitely felt like the birthday girls in that moment! 😂 That little touch meant a lot and made the experience even more memorable. Now let’s talk about the FOOD because THAT deserves its own conversation! I ordered the French toast and chicken with the sugar glaze, and when I tell you that French toast was MADE TO PERFECTION?! Whew! 🙌🏽 It was sweet, flavorful, and had the perfect texture. It was NOT soggy, which is a major thing for me when it comes to French toast. That sugar glaze took it to another level, and paired with the chicken? SO GOOD. Definitely something I would order again.
