First off, I’d like to emphasize that the food was excellent. I went to this restaurant many times at the old River North location and always had positively memorable experiences with the staff and food. This was my first time at the new location and I can only describe the dining experience as “odd”. When we arrived for our reservation there wasn’t a table ready yet (it was a Friday night at dinner time so totally understandable). However there was then an awkward scramble to put together a table for 4. Shoutout to the staff for figuring it out but it seemed like there wasn’t a plan to prepare for the reservation. We ordered Lychee Martinis and apparently ordered the last ones as they ran out of ingredients. This was not communicated to our table and we only knew because we overheard other servers talking about it. Then when it came time to order more drinks our server couldn’t recommend drinks because they were under 21 (fine but like know the menu?) and then the manager came to assist but getting a drink recommendation from them was like pulling teeth. Now for the weirdest part to me. Our server came over and told us that the kitchen had made an extra sushi roll and asked if we wanted it…for 10% off. Never heard that one before. We decided to take it but mostly because they were backed up and most of our food hadn’t come yet. What made it 100x worse was when another server came by and did the same thing to us later on. At that point it seemed tacky and cheap. I don’t need free stuff but if you’re going to pull the “oh the kitchen made an extra on accident” don’t you just give those out? That would leave a far better taste in my mouth than this marketing tactic. All in all, the food remains incredible. It felt like the management and staff were running and working through the issues of a brand new restaurant rather than an established operation.

Great time at Union, food was excellent as well as service. Connor did a great job and made good recommendations. Chareen was very accommodating and helped explain menu items. We will definitely be back.

This is a new location under new ownership, and for those who loved the original, it may fall short of expectations. While a few dishes hinted at what made the previous spot special, the overall experience just wasn’t the same. The ambiance lacked the character we remembered, there’s no alcohol service yet, and the nigiri rice was noticeably mushy—something we never encountered before. We chose this for our final dinner in Chicago before moving to Florida, which made the experience all the more disappointing. It simply didn’t capture what made the original place memorable.

Just walking in, the restaurant had multiple parties waiting at the door and hanging around the host table, with a few people leaving due to long wait times. Servers were busy, restaurant was not playing music, host visibly sick and coughed over the menus and tables, and also doubled as a busboy and server. I came with a larger party that didn’t get seated until 20minutes after our reservation time. After finally getting seated the experience was a bit better although had to check in with the server; we were missing a few items from the order. Also the absence of music was a bit off putting leaving it to be overall an odd experience. Menu items could have been appropriately priced because the food was delicious but with the experience that our party had, our dollar would have been better spent elsewhere.
