The London Carriage Works

We've been coming to place for years now – always make it a ritual on Christmas Eve to visit after going to the Philharmonic Hall to watch It's A Wonderful Life.
We got married here back in 2011 so have fond memories of the place.
However, in the past few years, we've not left feeling particularly satisfied. This time when we arrived and were taken to our seats, almost 15 mins passed and no one had come to take our drinks order. I had to get up and go and get someones attention.
It appeared they were understaffed so were stretched thin, which to be honest is unacceptable especially when we are spending close to £50 per head. Ok, it's not a Michelin star restaurant but you shouldn't expect to ask for anything here.
The service did improve as the meal went on and the staff are very friendly, it's just that you expect more and we weren't particularly blown away by the food. It was pretty good but it's been better in years gone by.
Overall it just didn't feel like value for money if I'm being honest.
Fabulous restaurant. The only reason I gave it an overall 4 was because there were a number of things on the menu they were unavailable. If we were to go again I would check the menu and pre order.
My partner and I booked for a pre-theatre meal.
We arrived early, so had a cocktail in the bar prior to visiting the restaurant. The cocktails were mixed and presented well and cost just under £ 10 each. The bar area has a nice relaxed ambiance, we relished the fact that there wasn't any televisions on every wall with football being thrust in our faces, which obviously meant there were no loud mouthed irritating "supporters" interfering with our enjoyment. The only negative was a man sat at an adjacent table sneezing his germs all over the place without any sight of Hankey usage evident, consequently we have now both contracted colds.
When we were ready to eat, the very polite matre de escorted us into the restraunt and asked us to select a preferred table, even advising us to rethink the one chosen as it was in a draughty spot, so this we did.
The restaurant isn't huge, which is a bonus as it has a more intimate feel. The table was clean and professionally set out with proper linen napkins.
Two menus were offered, a la carte & table dote ( they call it prix fixe ), we chose from the latter. The price for the price Frei was £23.50 a head for 2 courses. There were 4 choices on each choice...starter, main, desert, so not a great choice but there was something we both liked so stayed with it. I say there were 4 choices, but this is not actually true, a one of the choices from each course had a "suppliment" cost attached.... So the " fixed price" menu is inaccurate. Having "suppliments" added to items on a menu marketed as "fixed price" really irritates me, it is either fixed price for all, or it isn't. If a course is not a fixed-price item, by definition, it should not be on a fixed price menu but should be on the a la carte menu.
We both chose a main & desert. Both courses & meals were presented well and excellent quality.
The staff were attentive & polite. Beware of the implied "tip" sneakily added to the bill, naughty practice.
Nice food but the service was incredibly low : 1 hour to get the starters!☹️
The meal itself was really nice. However the food I don’t think was that good value for the money. The glasses of water that we had, had bits in the bottom of them which i don’t think was good to set the tone. One of the waiters, was taking the plates and my date was finishing eating his chips that came with his meal and had he took the last one he took the plate straight away without him even finishing eating his food which I don’t think for a top class restaurant is acceptable.
The food was a awful sent it back twice simply the worst meal we have ever had in a restaurant. Will never return.
Fantastic food free botlle of wine on the Monday deal loved it - was a tad slow service wise but otherwise very nice.
Excellent food staff very friendly a lovely experience before our visit to the theatre
Good food, the worst service I had received in my life
Food beautiful.
Just felt the staff had a lack of service training. Didn’t feel it matched what you where paying for. Supposed to be one of the top Liverpool restaurants so service should match. Needs to be a little more friendly.
Just as well the restaurant wasn’t too busy at 6pm, because they weren’t expecting us as Open Table had not notified them! 8.22 pm the previous day I made the booking. Poor service Open Table! Won’t use you again.
This was our second visit, we were a bit disappointed in the menu choices compared with our first visit.
I had the fillet which was dry and overcooked,
We had a lovely dinner at The London Carriage Works as part of our stay at The Hope Street Hotel. We have been before and always enjoyed it; the only disappointment being that our favourites from meals gone by (deconstructed steak pie and trifle) were not on the menu! Overall a great evening.
Excellent restaurant. Food and staff fantastic. Would not hesitate to recommend to anyone.
Ristorante molto bello e cool in una zona trendy. Prezzi elevati ed un servizio non sempre all altezza
We had a celebration lunch here and it was perfect. Good, wine, service,, ambience. It meant our day was memorable. Thanks
Reasonable food for the money. Quiet for a Saturday lunch. Pleasant and attentive staff
Fabulous evening had by all in our party of six,one member of our party had food allergies & was we’ll accommodated. Food was special, the wine list amazing & the staff were brilliant. Thanks for an evening to remember.
Food was good but portions from the set menu were tiny
Booked for Mums 76th birthday, absolutely faultless. Service was fabulous and will definitely be going back.
We had a very relaxed lunch. We were looked after by Lydia very well.

Service was rather slow with long waits between courses. Food was generally good but there was too much vinegar in the soup for my taste. It would have been better if oil and vinegar were supplied separately so one could add them as required.
We didn’t get a great table even though it wasn’t busy (we were round the corner by the serving station) but I have been before and sat in the main bit by the windows, which has a great atmosphere. The food was very good especially an amazing trifle for dessert.
Food excellent, but service was quite poor. When we ate on a Saturday lunchtime there was one waitress responsible for the whole dining room. She tried her best, but rushed service isn't what you would expect from this type of restaurant.

What an AMAZING dining experience. Great food & great service. We will certainly be back when next in Liverpool.
Third time visiting this restaurant and will be back for a fourth. Excellent service, gorgeous food and a lovely atmosphere.
We attended the London Carriage works at lunchtime. The food was good, although some of the potato on my main course was undercooked (al dente, not a good thing for potato!). However when I mentioned this to the waitress it was dealt with quickly and professionally. The creme brûlée was excellent. Great surroundings and overall very good.
Love this restaurant! Brilliant comfort food on freezing Saturday night. Great value set menu. Pigs cheek starter amazing. Liver main delicious but huge! Fab ginger creme brulee
We had a really nice evening at The London Carriage Works. The restaurant was very chic and modern. The starters were excellent - mine was beetroot and goats cheese. I had duck for my main course which was also very good.
Appalling. Waited 75 mins for starter. Nothing was hot. Maybe its still Waring
A mixed experience - starters were great. Mains were well ver cooked and had obviously been standing there for a while or the chef can't cook. Second time we had this problem so won't go back which is ashame as some of the food is really good.
London Carriage works - Liverpool
Yet again an excellent meal thoroughly enjoyed. I chose it because I have never been left down and was celebrating a special occasion.
Staff were a little less attentive than usual but still received good service and good food.
Visited The London Carriage Works, Liverpool for a birthday celebration with daughter and three of her friends - excellent meal, couldn't fault the food, but the champagne we chose was not available. And if that is the only minus, it can't be bad!
Fantastic food and really good service at The London Carriage Works.
Food and service were perfectly acceptable, but I was slightly disappointed by the atmosphere at The London Carriage Works. On making the booking I was called by Toptables to ask whether the reservation could be bought forwards by 15 minutes as it was fully booked at my requested time, which was an absolute lie as it was empty!
The London Carriage Works in Liverpool was a pleasure to visit. Friendly service and good, well-presented food in decent size portions. The early bird deal is very good value, although we didn't make use of it on this occasion. Will be back soon for sure.
The London Carriage Works Liverpool was very nice, great quality food.
We travelled up to Liverpool from London to see a football game and wanted to go somewhere nice for lunch beforehand. Having researched restaurants on Toptable, we decided on The London Carriage Works. The food and service were excellent. Thoroughly recommend it.
The London Carriageworks, Liverpool, Hope Street.
Fantastic food, ambience, service -wonderful. I could have chosen 90% of the menu. Opted for king scallop starter and a lobster main, both were to die for. Girlfriend asked for a change from the starter list and staff were wonderful in offering an alternative. Consistently a good restaurant to visit.
The London Carriage works, Liverpool. Took colleagues out for dinner
.The food was nice and a great wine list. The menu however isnt all
" fine dining" bits of it are rather like a gastro pub menu. But service good
So all and all well worth a visit.
