Bernie and Mickey Hanula founded the institution known as the Players Retreat. Less of a bar and restaurant, and more of a family, the PR remains a popular respite for the young and the old, the rich and the poor. It is a place where people from all walks of life rub elbows, share toasts, good times, and laughs. At 74 years old, very little has changed since its humble beginnings. In 1994 Pete Jarrell took over the PR and continued the tradition. Our friends Bernie and Mickey passed away several years ago. In their honor, our staff and our guests strive to keep the PR the way that it has always been and as it should always be. Thank you for your patronage and support over the years, and may the PR continue for another 74 years.

Poole’s is a modern diner with reimagined comfort food. It originally opened as Poole’s Pie Shop in 1945, and since then has been a staple of Raleigh's food scene where generations of locals have gathered to dine, celebrate, and rub elbows. Since 2007, Poole’s has been under the stewardship of chef Ashley Christensen and her team, who have honored the spirit of the diner’s comfort food roots while elevating the culinary experience with an emphasis on seasonal, locally produced ingredients and attention to detail. This restaurant, from renowned chef Ashley Christensen, is dedicated to the technique of cooking with wood fire. You can find a delicious wood-fired steak, of course; but much of the menu showcases the element of fire in more subtle ways. Don't miss dishes like roasted oysters with preserved lemon and chili butter; rabbit cotechino with embered kale relish, mustard frills, smoked rabbit jus; and luxurious pastas like the buttery agnolotti with grilled maitake, chèvre, lemon thyme.The space itself is sophisticated and sleek, and full of character. The building was established in 1907 and has formerly housed a funeral home and a bank (the restaurant's name is a hat tip to these former tenants). Don't miss the beverage program, including the extensive wine list. The wine cellar is housed in a former bank vault in the basement.

This was our first visit and we had always heard wonderful things… it’s safe to say it went beyond our expectations. Every flavor was perfect: the cocktails, the pimento cheese, the chicken, the steak, the macaroni… perfection. We will be going back.

We celebrated my daughter’s birthday over lunch. Wonderful experience. The food was perfection, and the service was exceptional. We shared the burrata as an appetizer with a bottle of rosé Crémant. My daughter had the lobster, and I had the ribeye dip sandwich. We shared the butterscotch crème brûlée for dessert. Whitney, our waiter was knowledgeable, friendly, and engaging. We will definitely be back.
